Letter IV · On why we do not take photographs.

A short note on the single rule that is the hardest to follow, and the one that makes the rest possible.

The house does not take photographs of members. The house does not permit photographs of members. The house will politely take your phone if it is held up during an evening, and will politely return it afterwards.

This is not because we are precious. It is because a room in which a camera is permitted is a different room than a room in which a camera is not. We are trying to hold the second kind of room, and we cannot hold it part-time.

You will not appear in our marketing. You will not appear in our archive. You will not appear in each other's social media. You will, however, appear in each other's lives. That is the trade.
